bridge scandal tonight. chris christie's former campaign manager appears to be the subject of a federal criminal investigation. in a court filing, bill stepien's attorney says his client is in, quote, the throes of a criminal investigation, and that the feds have tried to contact stepien directly, saying that on january 17th, an fbi special agent called stepien's cell. shortly later, two assistant u.s. attorneys called stepien's lawyer. then in mid-february, an fbi agent along with the department of justice investigator paid a visit to stepien's home. we're also learning the u.s. attorney's office tried to contact former deputy chief of staff bridget kelly and her parents. both stepien and kelly were very close to christie, and they are the only two to publicly say they will not turn over any documents. so where is this investigation going next? joining me now, former u.s. attorney kendall coffey. kendall, thanks for your time tonight. >> hey, thanks for inviting me, reverend. >> a criminal investigation, what does that tell you, kendall? >> well, it tells you that they decided that the

from washington, d.c. tonight's lead, new documents in the chris christie bridge scandal revealed. we're learning more about the actions of key christie aides and allies before, during, and after the lane closings. the information comes from david wildstein. the former bridge official who carried out the lane closings. he's the one who replied "got it" to that now infamous e-mail, "time for some traffic problems in ft. lee." that exchange came to light as part of subpoenaed documents. but a big question has been why did wildstein cross out some material? today the big news. many of those redactions have been revealed, exposing christie aides joking about abusing power. and we have names to go with statements that had been anonymous. a notorious example was the response by an unnamed person to complaints from the ft. lee mayor about children who couldn't get to school. quote, is it wrong that i'm smiling? someone wrote, before adding i feel badly about the kids, i guess. today we learned those comments came from bridget kelly, who is christie's deputy chief of staff and sent the "time
't know that there is that -- anything that ties chris christie to bridgegate in any of these, but what is apparent is that there was a culture, a short hand for enemies and punishment that was used frequently or comfortably by members of christie's inner circle. >> exactly. this kind of varies from the sort of sinister to perhaps more juvenile. in fact, that's the word that some women wisniewski used today in describing this that just shows the sort of cavalier juvenile attitude that bridget kelly and david wildstein seemed to have. i mean, the timing is interesting when -- that august 19th e-mail about traffic problems in front of the rabbi's house sort of echos the language just six days earlier when she wrote the infamous time for some traffic problems in ft. lee e-mail. so she does seem to have a fixation on creating traffic problems. but, you know, to be fair, none of this really sheds a whole lot of light on the core issues here of the use of government power for political retribution by creating traffic problems. >> the refrain, time for some traffic problems for -- insert name
